Are You Carrots, Eggs Or Coffee? (Leadership Skills Training #1)

So this lesson comes from Brian Klemmer who I just discovered a few weeks ago …bought all his books and have been devouring them ever since.

So the question for today’s lesson is…

Are you carrots, eggs or coffee?

Brian explains it like this…

When you put carrots in hot water, the water changes the carrots.

When you put an egg in hot water, the water changes the egg.

But…

When you put coffee in water, THE WATER CHANGES.

And that how leaders are too… When leaders are in a situation, they change it. They don’t allow themselves to be changed by it.

This reminds me of my favorite quote from Ghandi “Be the change you want to see in the world.

In the process of absorbing all kinds of network marketing training, I have heard over and over again, the speed of the leader is the speed of the pack. This is so prevalent in our businesses.

If you notice the people who are consistent and have a sense of urgency about their business are the ones who actually get to the level of success they desire and deserve.

If you’re team is going too slow for you…maybe that’s because you’re going too slow as well. They are following your lead.

Do any of you experience that? If so…tell me about it below.

I know I do…so lately I’ve been going “faster”…so that I can be the coffee it the water and change my environment and my team.

Two Kinds of Autoresponders: Which Is Right For You?

If you’re not using an autoresponder, then you’re really missing out on one of the key ingredients to building an online business.

What is an autoresponder?

An autoresponder is a piece of software which allows you to capture your website visitors information and then respond back to them in an automatic way. It also allows you to send “one off” emails to your list as well. It’s a key element to building relationships with your mailing list.

So if you don’t have an autoresponder yet, I want to explain that there really are two kinds. Keep reading and see which kind is best for you and your budget.

Hosted

A hosted autoresponder is software that you pay a subscription for….usually monthly. Costs can range from $10 upwards. Many of the services based their cost on number of subscribers you have or number of emails you send in a month.

Benefits:

  • easy to use
  • quick to implement
  • good support via 800 numbers or online support systems
  • send out your emails fast
  • good delivery rates: meaning your messages have a better chance of getting through

Disadvantages

  • can be costly if you have big list
  • some force a double opt-in which you may not want

Some examples of hosted autoresponder systems are GetResponse.com, ConstantContact.com and AWeber.com.

Self Hosted

A self hosted autoresponder is software that you have 100% complete control over and is physically stored on your own hosting account.

Benefits:

  • you have full control over how you make it work
  • very cost effective for the long run (usually a one time fee, some  are even free)

Disadvantages

  • send limits on your hosting account can cause messages to take hours to get out
  • not as easy to install (but some include a free installation)
  • not as user friendly to use

Some examples of self hosted autoresponders are AutoresponsePlus.com and phpList.org

I personally use the self-hosted option because a) I am pretty technical and b) it only cost me a one time payment for life.

Which ever method you choose, you must have an autoresponder.

Let me know what you use and why…

Build Your List With A Twitter Swap

If you’re looking for a free easy way to generate some traffic and build your list, try a Twitter Swap.

What is a Twitter Swap?

It’s basically swapping tweets with someone else. So first you need to find someone who has a following that you want to tap into. Contact them and ask them if they would be willing to tweet for you, if you tweet something out to your followers for them.

You can use a tool such as Twitterel.com to find others who are tweeting about your subject or use the basic Twitter Find People option to find  potential swappers.

“But what if they have a bigger following than me?”

Then offer to tweet more for them. For example if you have a following of 2,000 and they have a following of 8,000, then you’d work on a ratio of 1:4. You’d tweet their stuff 4 times for every time they tweet your stuff.

It’s a great way to create a mini partnership and get some more traffic/leads to your website or blog.

Do you know of any other interesting or unique ways to use twitter to grow your list? If so, please share them in the comments below.

Tips For A Viral Twitter Strategy

If you a viral twitter strategy…here’s a few things to keep in mind:

1) Just Ask. Remember that call to action thingy? Use it… Say Please RT, Please vote, Help me…whatever works.

2) Time of Day. Most tweets are done between the hours of 11am – 3pm….keep that in mind.

3) Include your link. I know you already know that….but you’d be surprised :)

4) Social proof works here too! When others see that your tweet is “retweeted” it provides a level of social proof.

5) Provide value. As in most cases in online marketing, value is absolutely necessary. Whether your tweet is a how to, instructions, a contest, a warning or breaking news…be sure it’s giving value.

Tweet Deck and SocialOOmph are my favourite twitter tools so far…
