A couple weeks ago I did a post on Why It’s Beneficial to Comment on Other People’s Blogs. And I explained a few reasons why this will benefit you. If you haven’t read it…I suggest you check it out after you’ve read this post.
But in this post I wanted to point out something that I feel not enough leaders are doing.
There is a default piece of code which gets attached to all comment links in WordPress which is called “nofollow” and what it does is it stops Google from following the commenters link. If that piece of code is NOT there, then Google will follow the link and counts it towards a higher ranking value for the commenters site or page.
When blog owners keep this little bit of code on their sites, you’re actually not getting any “link love” from the blog that you’re commenting on.
Yes, you are being seen by other commenters and all the points I made in my videos about why you should comment are still valid and I do highly recommend that you do comment on other people’s blogs for those reasons, whether or not they have removed the “nofollow” tag or not.
Here’s the thing…
There is no real reason (that I can think of) why you or any leader in this industry should not remove the “nofollow” code.
In internet marketing, the entire basis of success rides on you giving before receiving. So why not give “full on”? Link love and all?
I challenge all blog owners in network marketing to install this little plugin I found and starting giving 100% over and above to your readers.
Here’s a little video I made showing you the plugin and how to configure it.

And OF COURSE, I want you to leave a comment and get some LINK LOVE FROM ME.
What do you think? Should more leaders being doing this? If you don’t do it and have chosen not to, I’d love to know your reasons why.

I think the benefits outweight any disadvantages. . . I wasn’t aware that this being on a site could make a difference. I’ll have to try it. Thanks for sharing.

I just installed a ‘dofollow’ plugin into my wordpress blog and I couldn’t be happier.. now I’m using it as a way to get twitter followers to comment on my articles, using the #dofollow hashtag

i have seen blogs of leaders in online marketing who are talking about the advantages of do-follow links but in the same time they have no-follow on their blog. my questions would be, are there any disadvantages in offering do-follow links? i do not see any, but just wanted to be sure

Tracy,
Thanks so much for your info on how to remove the “nofollow” tags…I’m surprised that WordPress doesn’t change that. Like you said, you have to “give before you get.”
Thanks.

Love the post; I’m new to blogging and just learning what all the different plug-ins are about. I would’ve never thought that there’d even be an automatic “no follow” feature, never mind how to get rid of it.
I’m all about sharing the love and am trying to master commentluv as well. I feel like I’m not doing it right i.e. typing the right information in the right boxes.
But my point is that is soooo important to give before you get. If we all did it in every aspect of out lives, imagine how cool the world would be.

Thank you Tracy for pointing this out. As Katie said, the Nofollow default setting is probably there to stop the blog spammers and chances are it is probably not widely known that it’s there. Definitely worth keeping an eye on it during development.

Hi Tracy! Thanks for the insightful post! I definitely agree that your loyal commentators should definitely get ‘link love’ from commenting. However, when you have the ‘no follow case by case’ plugin installed, you just have to keep very good track of who’s commenting and who’s legitimate. So it does require more consistent energy and effort on your part. Even if someone’s a good commenter, if they’re linking to a site that’s ‘spammy’ and you don’t catch it, it’s not a good situation for your site rankings.
What I do, is I reward my top commentators with the top commentators plugin and all of those people get ‘do follow’ links when they comment. Just another idea
But thank you for your leadership! You’re awesome! Totally lovin’ your blog

Thanks Katie, the feeling is mutual

And I agree with you ..there is a bit more work involved but I find so far the spamy type comments are very few…could just be cause my site isn’t as busy as yours…yet

Hi Tracy:
Thank you for the video and sharing information on the Nofollow caseby case plugin. Had no idea that WordPress places a no follow default in the system. I definitely want to make sure the readers who makes comments on my blog get the link love they deserve.

I agree completely Tracy! It’s as confusing to me why wouldn’t someone want to allow more link love, especially being leaders in this industry!
Thanks as always for the value you share!
